Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why do you use so much mulch?
Mulch provides a variety of benefits including weed suppression, and adding nutrients the soil.
-
What type of mulch do you use?
We primarily use mulch provided to us by local tree service companies. We make sure this mulch is free of spreadable invasive species. Cedar mulch is available upon request.
-
Should I fertilize my new planting?
Our low maintenance gardens don’t require fertilizer. The plants we provide are perfectly selected for the unique conditions of your yard. Instead of fertilizing, we add mulch to add nutrients to the soil.
-
Does pruning hurt my tree?
The short answer is no, as long as pruning is done properly. Pruning encourages trees to develop a strong structure and reduces the chance of injury or property damage. Pruning the crown of your tree increases airflow and can reduce pest problems. Pruning should also be done in order to remove diseased branches.
-
When is the best time to prune my tree?
You can prune your trees any time, although winter is best. Pruning in the winter causes minimal stress to the tree because it will be dormant. Further, diseases aren’t able to spread and branches are easier to see.

Nothing will grow in the shade. What makes your plants different?
Our shade gardens are very successful because we use plants that are naturally found in shady habitats. In short, we plant the right plant in the right place. Common plants that we use in our shade gardens are ostrich ferns, wild ginger, and white wood aster. You can also take a look at our shade plant kits to get your hands on some plants that will thrive in the shade.

Watering – What do I need to know? When? How much? For how long?
For new plantings, we recommend watering daily during the heat of the summer. When watering, make sure that the mulch surrounding your new plants is saturated. If your planting is 1-2 years old, we recommend watering 2-3 times per week. If your planting is 3+ years old, water as needed. For example, if there is a hot spell water more frequently, or if the leaves on your plants begin to curl spend more time watering. Always make sure that the mulch surrounding your plants is saturated. Setting up a sprinkler system can be very helpful for making sure that your plants get all the water that they need.
-
Can you identify this plant for me?
Send an email to christen@redfoxforestry.ca with a variety of photos of the plant in question. Please include a description of the habitat that it’s found in. We’ll do our best to identify your plant.
-
Are your plantings guaranteed?
We work hard to provide you with high quality, locally sourced native plants. Our plantings are not guaranteed as once the planting has been installed it is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain. We’re more than happy to provide you with easy instructions on how to help your garden thrive. Maintenance arrangements can also be made upon request.
-
How much do your services cost?
Our planting services are tailored to meet your needs. Smaller gardens typically start at approximately $2,000 and can increase depending on the size and scope of your project.
Arborist reports start at $200.
We also sell DIY plant kits in 3 sizes. You can visit the store section of our website to view them.
